ok, where do we get our sense of self? if you wre a really popular guy in your small hometown, where all your family lives, where all your friends since preschool lived- what would happen if you moved across the country, say for a job.

your whole identity has been wrapped up in a small town mentality- how do you have a sense if independence apart from that? how would you suggest a person cope with this?

  1. Self-esteem is what you think of you, not what others think of you, that's other-esteem.

No matter where you go you are always with you.

  2. Interesting question that I don't believe anybody has a firm answer for.

Social constructionists would argue that while we do have a unique self, our sense of it is dependant on the context we're in. We can never truly know ourselves because our knowledge is going to be influenced by the discourse of others so we can only ever really see ourselves in the terms of others.
