A sub without a box?

Question

i have two rockford fosgate subs and they dont have a box me and my dad are almost done with the boxes and theyre big for the the subs theyre 8 inch subs with a box that is 15x15x15 im planing to put a 6 inch speaker in it too since theres enough room

i have two questions

what difference does it make to have a sub without box and why

and since the space inside is too large for the sub would that have any affect

by the way the boxes are enclosed

Subwoofers require a box because:

1. The sound produced by the back of the subwoofer needs to be sealed away from the sound produced by the front, or the sound waves will cancel each other, reducing the output, and

2.  The subwoofer requires an enclosed volume of air inside the box, to help control the movement of the cone.  As the speaker cone moves back and forth, the pressure of the trapped air prevents it from moving too far.  Without this air cushion, the subwoofer can be damaged by over-excursion; ie, the flexible parts that secure the cone to the speaker basket can break or tear.  If you have a box that's much too large for the subwoofer, the air pressure won't be as strong, and you can easily damage the sub while playing deep bass notes.

Your question is confusing but If I get this right;

1.  why are subs in a box?

2.  will sub work in oversized box?

3.  can i add 6" speaker to a sub box?

heres resulting answers

1.  Subwoofers work on a baffel theory.  kind of like an echo.  If you yelled in an empty warehouse, you get an echo.  If you go to the park and yelled you brains out, you get nothing.  The sub is working the same way as the warehouse.  the sub is creating a concussion sound wave in the enclosed chamber and sending it out when the sub moves forward.  the amount of air space in the box will adjust the harmonic tone of the woofer.  A larger woofer box creates a lower harmonic and a smaller one creates a higher pitch.

2.  If that box size is each, thats pretty big, you'll get sound but not sure if it will be good sound.  if its for the 2 subs, then should be alright.

3.  If you have the 8' woofer creating a sound wave, and you add a 6" speaker creating a sound wave in the same box, its like 2 guys yelling in your warehouse.  What happens?  the 2 diffferent soounds cancel each other and you get a strange canceled sound.

make them air tight so that makes better bass sound and that means more boom!!!!

gotta have an enclosure for best bass responce.  Dont add the 6in speaker.  And if the volume is to big for the manufacturers sub requirements then add blocks of wood inside the box to lower your v olume inside the box.
