A supposed debt from mil collections

My mam received a letter yesterday from mil collections saying she owes an outstanding debt from cambridge gas which was taken over in 2002 by southern electricity. and my mam has never been a customer of either company and now mil collections are trying to take my mam to court can any one help.

  1. First of all, this debt may be beyond your states statute of limitations to try and collect in court.  Check your states SOL at the following link

    If it is "time barred" then ignore them, they can not take you to  court or garnish any wages or seize any accounts.

    They would have to show written proof in court that the debt was your mams anyways, and if she never had an account with them, then they have no legal proof.

    I've received the same letter and never have heard of this company. I've gone to energywatch with a complaint and also Watchdog as the staff at MIL are very rude and just keep telling me they will see me in Court. As soon as I have a reply from energywatch I'll contact you. If you go to watchdog also they mayget them to look at it further.

  3. Ask for proof of the debt and at what address it is from.  If she never lived there or has receipts, cashed checks from a utilty during that th=ime then she is off the hook
