A toy for children with disabilities?

Question

For an assignment in one of my classes I need to physcially make a toy that if modified for a child with disabilities. The toy needs to be something that can be used in a phy ed class and durable colorful and safe. Does anyone have any ideas on what I could make. I don't know exactly what I should make and any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

A few of my ideas are:

* A squishy ball inside a basketball net for a child with autism

*A ball with bell or some noise inside for a child that is blind.

How about a ball with a massager in it?  It will make noise and give a sensation.  How about something that fits on a shoe that a blind kid could listen to that would allow them to follow while running.  Something like a bell.  good luck!

If the toy is for a autistic student, I would definitely choose something that has velcro on it....this would be extremely beneficial to a student with disabilities.  I teach a small class of autistic students during summer school.  I bought these circular flat mits that have an elastic strap (glove) that came with a velcro tennis ball.  Believe me, if the student displays autistic characteristics- be aware of anything that they could throw, place in their mouth, poke themselves..or anyone else.  The texture is also pleasantly stimulating for them as well.  Some autistic students can also be overstimulated or become hyperactive with larger, bright colored toys they cannot have in their hands or close to them.  So, a toy that would be thrown extremely far...like a football, or kite wouldn't be safe for them independently....but my kids really enjoyed when I flew a kite for them.  Hope some of this helps, or adds to your good ideas!!!  Derek

   I am thinking about Casey Boehmer, a one-armed, four club, juggler, would a holster arangement that holds a fielder's mitt work for a one-armed baseball player?

   I met a blind club juggler at last years main festival. Sky King  didn't cuss me out for balancing her crutch on my chin!

kids with autism like to play and fiddle with things. so if you can make a small toy that doesnt make noise-or that much noise and doesnt distract other people then your good!

a sound attachment to a basket ball hoop for a child who is visually impaired

if you are mechanically inclined-a toy activated by pressing a button (switch)--they are already sold such as a ramp to roll a bowling ball-when switch is pressed-ball is released

any soft blow up ball with air left out to make it easier to catch

a rope for a child who is visually impaired to hold onto during a race-with a ribbon to indicate finish line and stop running before the end of teh rope is reached

a stand to support a baseball bat to help a child swing

a larger basketball hoop-maybe with a funnel from the back board to guide the ball in
