Question:

AFL drafting non-football players?

I heard there is a rule that AFL clubs can sign players as free agents if they've registered to any aussie rules club for less than three years. Is this true, if so do the clubs use it often?

  1. There has certainly been a lot of talk about this lately. I am not sure that they can actually do it yet but I think they are trying to get through some red tape about it.

  2. Yes, my club west coast did this also. We have one extra player than is normally allowed on a NSW Scholarship, Ryan Davis or something like that.

  3. no they dont draft them they pre contract them

  4. I don't know if it's true or not.

There is talk of "free agents" & the paid agents are threatening to take the AFL to court to sort it out.

I couldn't make head nor sense of what they were waffling on about. I don't thimk many of them did either.

Someone who understands the matter better than I will surely come in hear & show-off his knowledge.

  5. Swans drafted some guy last year who is a talented basketball player and good all round sportsman. I think his name is Orreal. I guess they don't really have anything to lose.

  6. My club - StKilda - rookie drafted Khan Haretuku and he is listed on the club website (players section) under "NSW Scholarship" instead of being listed in with the other rookies.

So, I think you mean that clubs can sign players as  "Scholarship Players" (or something like that) and develop the player outside of the club list and then draft them.

I *think* Sydney did this (or is doing this..) with their player - Jake Orreal.

I don't know where to read up about it though... so I can't provide any links or definite answers. sorry...

    ..but I hope it's helped some! -.^

oh yea.. and there has been talk of allowing players to become 'free agents' to encourage more trading between clubs.. but it's only talk at this stage.
