Kerry asked a bank teller to cash a $390 check using $20 bills and $50 bills. If the teller gave her a total of 15 bills, how many of each type of bill did she receive?

12 twenty's and 3 fifty's

12- 20 dollar bills ($240) & 3- 50 dollars bills($150) add them together and you get $390

Answer 3

let  x = number of 20's, and 15 - x = number of 50's

20x = total cost of 20 dollar bills

50(15-x) = total cost of 50 dollar bills

> 20x + 50(15-x) = 390

> 20x + 750 - 50x = 390. Distribute and combine like terms

> -30x = -360

> x = 12

12 twenties, 3 fifties

12- 20 dollar bills

I will set x equal to the $20 bills and (15-x) equal to the $50 bills.

390 = 20(x) + 50(15-x)

390 = 20x +750 -50x

50x = 20x + 360

30x = 360

x =12   , $20 bills

15-x = 15-12= 3,   $50 bills

12 twenties, 3 fifties
