ALGEBRA HELP?!?!?!?!?! Math problem due tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!?

I am doing a math problem that involves step one as 1 square, then step 2 is 4 squares, and step 3 is 9 squares. I'm supposed to write an equation showing the change from step to step...can someone help me figure out the equation??? This is due tomorrow so I really need to know!!

  1. the first step is x^1 the second is x^2 and the third is going to be x^3 so an equation might be x^(n+1) where n starts off as 0

    the first picture is one squared, the second is 2 squared, the third is 3 squared and so on...
