My 4 year old mare is still dropping teeth and when i flipped up her lips to check on her loose tooth i notices that she is getting k9's. Is this natural? If so is it rare. My friends mares don't have them.

  1. Not unusual.   If they bother her (THE BIT) then have a dentist remove them. If not they don't hurt anything.

Again I say Get a GOOD vet BOOK.

  2. It is normal in horses under the age of 9yrs old. A horse looses its canine teeth between the age or 9-12. The way to get them out earlier is have your dentist come out. Have him pull them, and do a full oral exam. Not just a float the full dentistry work. SO yes it is natural, but most people have them puled at like age 2.

    Hope this helps! Good luck!

Mares can and do have wolf teeth...some resource links for you above which discuss "wolf" teeth in mares.

  4. The outside incisors your horses teeth are still baby teeth at four years old.  At 4 1/2 those should all finally be adult teeth but not yet completely in wear.  The teeth will all be in wear at the age of 5.

The teeth come in inside to outside.  When they are young the first teeth are @ 8 days, second @ 8 weeks, lasts @ 8 months.  The baby teeth will drop to adult teeth (again inside to outside) @ 2 1/2 years, second @ 3  1/2 years, and lasts @ 4 1/2 years.  Aging can be determined past that by looking at other features of the teeth.

The canines (wolf teeth) are normal but rare in mares.  Some mares will get them and some won't.  Many people do get them removed but they don't have to be.

  5. have your horse dentist come out. k9s are supposed to be removed and he will take care of that for you and any other questions you have
