About Internet on laptop?

Question

I just got a new laptop, but I do not have internet on it. I use AT&T Yahoo DSL for my home computer, so is there a way that I can use the same service on both my computer and laptop without paying extra money for the service? If yes, how can I set it up? Do I have to buy a wireless card or something?

depending on wat modem u have u mite be able to get wifi from the modem if ur modem doesnt have wifi i suggest u buy a g router and it will come with instructions on how to set it up

If it's a new laptop from the shop, it probably already has somewhere for you to plug a network cable into.  Network cables are usually blue, sometimes red and have a squarish clear connector on the end - if you don't have wireless for your home computer, you are probably using a network cable between your computer and your modem.

If your modem has more than one place to plug a network cable into, you should only need to get another network cable for your laptop, to run between the laptop and the modem.  Otherwise, there might be a USB port in the modem that you can use between one of the computers and the modem but USB connections tend to be less reliable than the blue or red cables.  (The blue or red cable system is called ethernet - ethernet cable, ethernet "ports" (holes for the cable), etc.)

If your modem is a wireless modem, you need wireless networking in your laptop.  This may be built in already - a quick ring to where you bought it will tell you.  Otherwise, you will need a wireless networking card to put into the PCMCIA slot (also known as the credit card slot).

Now, the other thing you need to know, somewhere on that computer, if it's a Windows computer, there's a version of Internet Explorer (IE).  When you have all the access set up properly, you might find that you can just open IE and go on the internet.

A lot of people don't realise that you don't need the fancy "doorway" that the ISP provides.  You can just use any internet program of your choice, such as IE or Firefox or Safari.

So if you have the internet access through the modem sorted out, look for the little blue 'e' icon for IE on your computer desktop and click (or double-click) on it.  When it opens, type in where you want to go and hit Go (or Enter on your keyboard).  You'll be surfing the internet.

If you can't find the blue 'e', try going to Start, then Run and then type in "iexplore.exe" without the quotes and click Okay.

If your laptop doesn't have wireless built in, you will have to buy a card and a wireless router. If it DOES have it built in, you just have to buy a wireless router and plug the line into it.

You can order the wireless modem from at&t all you will pay is the modem that way you can connect your computer to it and have the laptop on the wireless network. New laptops have wi-fi so you don't need to buy any cards. Don't buy the router just get it ftom at&t you its more expensive but has a 2 year warranty.

Hi there,

You will need two things. A wireless router for splitting and broadcasting your internet and a wireless card for your laptop if you don't have one in-built in your laptop. When you set up your router, make sure you use make sure you use WAP security rather than WEP. WAP is a lot more secure, so you don't get your neighbors stealing you bandwidth. I would recommend either Netgear or D-Link wireless equipment. Both are reliable and come with easy instructions.

in order to get internet you need to buy a WIRELESS router and some network cables. that way you can use the same internet on computer and laptop. Setting it up however isn't the easiest if you aren't so good with computer networking

Yep, you need a wireless router.  But you're only gonna have your internet when you're within the router's signal - you can't go out and use it.

buy a wireless PCI card for your laptop. linksys is really good. and upgrade your router. so your desktop can be connected to the router. and you can use your laptop thoughout the household with the wireless PCI card for the laptop. (since you don't have a built in Wi-Fi)
