Is it true that the Autobahn has LESS accidents than all the major UK motorways?

If so, why dont we de-restrict all our motorways, this way people will concentrate more while driving at 150mph+

  1. Theres only a small portion of the autobahn system that has no speed limit.  On most of it, if you are going over 130 km/h and involved in an accident it's your fault - regardless!  That'll be one reason why the accident rate might be lower.  Besides, have you seen the state of some of the cars here on the motorway?  I wouldn't trust them over 70 mph, let alone 150!!

  2. I don't know, the accident rate is the UK is a great deal lower than in most continental countries, however they have been tightening up on things like speeding recently.  I'm not even sure where you would go to get comparative statistics.  Try the Office for National Statistics but I gues you'd need to compare Motorways with Autobahns.  I 'd bet the Autobahn has a lower accident/fatality rate.

  3. Its all well and good concentrating, but do you have time to react to a blowout at 150mph?

  4. Do you know the biggest cause of fatalities in the UK on motorways, is truck-drivers running up the back of stationary cars on the hard-shoulder that are sat waiting on the breakdown-man!  Truckers drive waaaaay too long to concentrate effectively.

  5. The accident rate has nothing to do with the speed.

It is about better restrictions on driving, and more consideration for fellow drivers.

But, no, the Autobahn accident rate is not all that lower than any UK motorway.
