Access to FTP server?

Question

OK, say my friends have an existing website, but wants me to upload some stuff i wrote onto it.

They have sent me the ftp server: ftp.XXXXXX.com

and the alt server, username and my psswrd.

but i dont know where to "sign in"

obviously i'm not a computer person

How do i access it and upload the stuff?

You must use an FTP client to do this.  There are some nice free ones for Windows.  Some of the more popular ones are CuteFTP and Filezilla.

In Filezilla, in the window you are presented with when you launch the program, you'll see some fields near the top of the window where you can enter all of that information. There will also be a field for "port", but you can leave that empty.

Once you connect, you'll see the files on the FTP server on the right side of the window, and your local files on the left side.  From here, you can just drag and drop files onto the FTP server.

I know that CuteFTP is also pretty easy to use, but I don't have it installed at the moment, so I can't really describe the interface or give instructions for it. Most FTP clients are rather similar anyway, so you shouldn't have too much trouble no matter what client you use.

type    ftp.XXXXXX.com  into IE and enter you user name and password

you can also try cuteftp  not sure of link  search it

it will prompt you to put in the username and password whenever you try to connect.

If the ftp site is setup with security you should just be able to type:

    ftp://ftp.xxxxxx.com into your browser address(URL) line.  You should get a pop-up with a user-name and password fields.  Fill them in and hit enter.  You should then be on the ftp site.

Try visiting the site as:

ftp://username:[e-mail]

Alternatively,

Download FileZilla ftp client.

The domain name in the filezilla client is the xxxxx.com

the username and pass are as you know them to be.

Click quickconnect and then view the files.

Some sites even major ones make it easy.  Across the top generally on the right side there is a query for Upload.  Go there and follow instructions.  Ones I know (for practice are MSNBC tv, fearnet.com.  I don't go to Youtube etc.
