  1. For pre-school children 'reading' is mainly 'pre-reading' so I suggest:

-Making your own books-take photos with digital camera and then children can help adult to write the words for the story.

-Puppets-simple well known stories like Goldilocks, 3 Little Pigs etc is easy to act out along with the story.

-Role play-make a restaurant with menu's, open and clsoed signs, waitress pads etc. Play WITH the children and all sorts of pretend reading can happen!

-Letter recognition-playdough-pre-make differnet letter mats, or have shape cutters-children can try to find and then make their name using the playdough.

-Story time-read a story with the children -somethign repetitive like 'Going on a Bear Hunt'means the children can join in with some lines of the story.

As long as it's fun and exciting most activities can promote reading!

  2. The best is the alphabet.

If they learn that, reading will be extremely easy for them.

    Ex:

    A-

    sounds like- ahh.

    like- apple.

    B-

    sounds like- bee

    like- Ball.

  3. I have taught reading to infants in school.  I really like the Oxford Reading Tree scheme as the illustrations are bright and appealing and the textg is often full of humour.

Alongside the actual books I know you can get flashcards, the characters can be purchased as hand puppets, there was also an activity book for teachers which gave examples of word games to play which ran parallel to all the stages of the scheme.

The only downside is if you are not in education and are asking this as a parent then the cost can be quite high.  However, on sites like amazon.co.uk you can buy "new and used" which makes it a bit cheaper

  4. read a easy book then try them to draw characters or answre easy questions like wat was the pigs name little pig or sum

  5. puppets are great to get a point across, or play acting.

  6. yes....i just did my silver award for girl scouts and i used something for this. Use a Leapfrog Read and Write. Its fun and kids love it. It is a game type console were you instert a book that you buy with it and you can touch the words and they will be spoken out loud...It is kind of hard to describe but it is really helpful. My young cousin has one. Look @ target or on target.com and places like that

  7. try this website and look out for 'Montessori language' or one of the other books --> http://www.montessori-book.com

  8. Try a preschool book, sorry not sure of title, called Caps, caps, caps.  It is a great counting story that you can use to sort colours and numbers.  Sorry I would be more specific but it's been a while since I used this with kids but it was an easy book to come up with activities for.

Also another good activity is to read a classic story, like 3 little pigs, Goldilocks, little red riding hood, and so on.  And have them make up a different ending or sequel.  Or they could draw each character from a story and put the picture on sticks as puppets and tell the story in a puppet show.  I used to do this too they love the Goldilocks and the 3 bears one for that.

  9. Use street/road signs when your out and about, children will enjoy trying to find signs on their journey.  They will then start to recognise letters and words.

  10. Brown,Bear, Brown Bear come to mind

Stories that rhyme and have   a lot of repeating.

Also read a wide range of books

PS: Maisy books are great as well.

  11. get  wide variety of books, such as board books, big books, touch/feel books. also books on tape are excellent. let children look at catalogs and magazines..let them draw the story after you read it..let them make up their own story and you make it into a book for them..give them dry erase boards to have them write words from books...give them magnetic letters to make words, depending on the age teach them about the beginning, middle and end of a story....let them read to you, even if they cant read yet...read the same story several times, they will start to recognize words usually by the pictures if they hear the story and see the pictures over and over

  12. Make your own books. Gather all the words that they can maybe remeber such as duck or dog...etc..and make booklets using large pics with very few words. Make slots on a card board ,which the kids have  decorated . Put the books in the slots and the kids can enjoy  after they have finished their play, maybe after lunch when they are full and it is quiet time.Because they took part in making them, the kids will love to read them.

  13. get the books that have cassettes or cds with them, they help keep attention focused

  14. Hey i am currently in college taking the ece program and we are doing literacy. Children like reading things that will keep tehm interested my favorite way to do this is get a book read it your self and then right down three categories ex:

Activities   discussion  interaction this depends on the age also i will do the book that i have read its called the lion hunt  i had read the book and knew it by heart and then i did interaction where i read it and got the children to do certain activites like at first it says we are going on a lion hunt i would stop and ask them what would they bring you got to engage them in the reading so... the children would say a hat well then i would say lets put on your hat it was really fun if u would like more info here is my email address tammy_77_@hotmail.com
