  1. The purpose of the Advanced Open water course, regardless of the certifying agency, is to give the diver more experience while under the guidance of an Instructor as well as allowing you the chance to experience the different types of diving that are available to you.

Certifying agencies differ a bit as to the requirements for Advanced Certification so you might want to go to their websites and see what the requirements are for the agency that interests you.

Completion of the Advanced course also increases your depth range to 100-130 feet.

Most agencies require that navigation and deep diving be included and the advanced dives completed fulfill one of the dives needed for particular specialty courses.

It is sort of like going on a cruise.  The ship goes to different ports and if you find one port that you like, you can plan a vacation there after the cruise.

As far as any classroom time, some of the portions of the Advanced course may require some formal classroom time but for the most part the lectures are usually held at the dive site.  A book or books are a requirement as well. You read and answer the questions at the end of the chapters and the instructor goes over those questions  with you.
