Advice for Luxor, Egypt?

i shall be going to luxor at the end of july for one week only with my 2 teenage daughters, my sister and her 8 year old son. i know its going be extremely hot but have read all the advice from tripadvisor members, especially to go on trips early in the morning and to relax in afternoon. as i will be spending only one week there what should be top of my list to visit bearing in mind that i dont really want to spend a full day sightseeing because of the heat but would prefer to be back at hotel by lunch time? evenings i guess my daughters will love to go around the shops. i would be grateful for any advice

welcome to luxor any time , i work in tourist company and live in luxor , usually we arrange the visits for our guest in early morning  because all the places here start at 06:00 a.m in east or west bank

east bank contain luxor temple,karnak temples,luxor museum and mummification museum

west bank contain many places like valley of the kings , valley of the quins,hatshepsout temple,madent habou , nobles tombs and dair El madena

when you arrive to luxor you can visit any thing from the above

im glad you are aware it would be hot so as to take care .

apply sunblock to protect yourselves from the sun.

start early  before the sun.

there are monuments to see on the east bank where your hotel would be situated , ie, the Karnak and others .

the Sound and Light Show is on that side , too .

it is in the evening .

on the west bank , you will see the Valley of the Kings , the Valley of the Queens , Hatshebsut Temple , and many others .

you can take the feluka , ie , boat with sails , in the evenings .

there are several hotels that have shows or discos .

there are shops that sell souvenirs .

have a pleasant holiday.

Yes youre right, go out early in the morning to visit temples etc and places of interest, return to the hotel for lunch and a couple of hours rest, then go out again around 4pm  the souqs will be open then until late. Youll feel more like bartering then more than in the heat. Also there are places to visit at night such as the light theatre at the Luxor Temple or Karnak Temple.

The light and sound show is good and its of course at night. The museum is also good and its cool.

But please keep an eye on the kids while out shopping as you do get pestered a lot.

It will be HOT very hot.

There are lots of trips to the sights most will start in the morning and you will be back before lunch.

If you do want somthing to do during the day the museum is air conditioned and quite good.

Not much happens between 11am and 4pm as its just too hot so have a sleep and do lots of shopping and seeing the town at night.

The Temple tour at night is fantastic with a light show and stuff (just like in the bond movie)

It is a good advice to start early at sunrise.

Always carry with you a bottle of water. Drink from time to time.

Take your hat and cotton scarf, you will like to cover your arms from the sun. If you do not have, you will find many in Luxor. Also take with you a sun block, it is also sold in pharmacies in Luxor.

It is good to cover the back of your neck. this is done by a cotton scarf. The temperature of the body is regulated from that part. If somebody suffers from the heat it is good to pour room temperature water on the back of his neck so that the body is comfortable. Do not feel shy to pour some water on your face and head, it will make you feel good.

Tea is a good drink. It closes the pores of the tongue which makes you feel less thirsty. It does not have to be hot, it can be warm or cold.

On the eastern side of the Nile the most important visit is that of the Karnak temple. This can be done at day time and in the evening at the sound and light show. Other attractions are the Luxor temple and the museum.

On the western side you will visit the Deir el Bahari temple of Queen Hatshepsut, the valley of the Kings, of the Queens and that of the nobles.

Try the Valley of the Kings on the west bank with Hatshepsut one day. The Luxor museum is a must and its air conditioned. Also Karnak on the east banks also a must.  If you have or want more, then it’s back to the west bank again and try anyone of the following but don’t try more than two places, three at the outside in one day. valley of the queens, or the workman both have wonderful tombs but the queens is formal while the workman less so and very small tombs but the paint is amazing in both. Mediniet habu nice little cafes outside too or the ramaseum. Buy water to take with you, the touts will charge a lot more on sites. Your daughters will attract a lot of attention. If you are happy for them to go out there is a disco in the etap hotel, the whole family can go there if you like there is usually a belly dancer around midnight but not an Egyptian one. There are other discos, but unless your daughters are older teenagers I would not recommend them. The shops tend to be tourist shops only and I don’t think any of you will find them interesting for more than half a day. Wherever you go you will be pestered by people trying to get you to buy something. Learn to say la shukrun, very firmly, it means no thank you. But they will be very persistent especially with teenage daughters. Do go out on a felucca in the late afternoon its cooler on the water and most of the boats will put up a sunshade. Its great fun. Go out to different restaurants and hotels for evening meals, find a taxi driver you feel comfortable with and then you don’t have to keep bargaining for the price. Always agree prices and bargain. taker a walk down the corniche at night. Try one of the out of town coffee shops like Thebes or habib. But do take insect cream. You will get bitten.
