i need some running advice. i need to know to stop leg cramping while running. it always happens in my left calf and ankle. i dont know if its cramping, its more like a terrible burning feeling. keep in mind this always happens in my left leg. i also need some advice for breathing techniques. i go into mini panic attacks because i feel like i am suffocating. in reality i am not that fatigued, but i dont know how to breath right so i just take huge breaths through my mouth which make it worse.

  1. Leg cramps could be lack of potassium.  Try eating a banana on days you run.  Also, make sure to warm up properly and stretch when done running.

As for breathing, even though your body can handle running, your lungs need to be trained.  You should be breathing from your belly, that gives you the most air.  The more you practice breathing like this and running, the more efficient your lungs and breathing become.

  2. I have been running for 8 years now and would break running down to two things: training and clothing. So, generally speaking, this is what I would recommend for you:

I would strengthen the core: calves, quads, hams, back and abdominal (the "six pack" muscles along with the obleks), chest and arms. But when strengthening these muscles, I would focus more on the muscle endurance not the muscle bulk. For more advice for this, I would consult with a personal trainer. For the running part, I would stay flexible as it helps/contributes to your balance (so do the muscles in your core) but also helps prevent some injuries like pulled muscles and shin splints. Also, I would try to make up a schedule where you can run for X amount of days and try to have a long run. I would start off slowly, running about 2-3 miles per run for the first week and increase my mileage per week. Make sure you have the following: a good diet, hydration, sleep, a good sense on how to take care of your body, and sleep.

Though I am biased towards Nike as a brand, I would recommend you to go to a running-specific store, like Fleet Feet in Carrboro, NC. They can help you find the right shoe because people buy shoes that aren't necessarily right for their feet, but more comfortable or fashionable. But after you get the correct shoes or even if you haven't, I would go to any major athletics store and ask the sales associates. Clothing is all about the comfort meaning that whatever fits well, feels good as it naturally falls on you, and how it feels and fits while running. Good luck!!!

  3. Hi there,

I have asthma and I've mastered running with asthma but taking short deep breathes along the way. (You don't have to be loud about it but I look at as like they taught me for giving birth-short multiple breathes) Don't be afraid to stop for a minute to regain your stance, it can work wonders.

The pain in your calf could be due to lack of proper stretching, or not enough fluid thru out the day. I know if I'm dehydrated, my legs tingle. Also you may be like myself, I have a left leg that's slightly shorter than the other so it feels all the aches and pains alot more.

IF it continues or worsens, get to the doctor.
