Advice on A.P. classes

I'm going to be taking a few A.P. classes this year. School comes easy to me, I never bring any work home because I do it in school. I have really good grades, not straight A's but a lot of them so I'm not dumb. How should I go about studying/doing the work? They will be challenging classes and I know I'll have to try hard. How did you survive and pass your A.P. classes?

I'm taking an AP English course this coming year for my junior year, and while this is my first time with an AP class, the teachers gave us a few tips at an assembly on the last week of school, so I'll pass them on to you:

* Being present is one of the most important things. If you skip, miss a day or more due to an illness, or leave early/late you're responsible for all of the work, and it's probably 2x what you would have missed in a normal class.

* If there's no written homework given, study. Study even if there is written homework, it's important because if you fall behind, it can be hard to catch back up.

Make friends with others in your class who care about their grades as much as you do. Having good friends to study with and to help you out whenever you need help can make AP classes much easier.

For the harder AP classes I like to stay ahead of the class. Read ahead in the textbook. It doesn't matter if you don't understand everything, if you stay a chapter ahead it makes things so much easier because when they're going over it in class you'll already know the basics and will be able to focus more on the harder topics. And never wait until last moment to prepare for a test. Lots of people like to wait until the night before and cram and it work for some people but for most people this backfires horribly in their face so don't cram. Give yourself enough time to study before the test and ask the teacher for help with whatever you don't understand. Good luck and don't forget to have fun too!

Do the minimum you have to to get through with an A, then cram the week before to learn all the material you never bothered to during the class.

I took five AP Classes in High School. It really just depends on the teacher. You'll have to feel them out to see how you need to study, etc. But I found that as long as I took very diligent notes, STUDIED them, and completed my assignments, I was able to do well on tests. You definitely need to realize that you won't be coming home with no homework anymore. It sucks, but it's true. Get used to long, stressful nights of studying. If you learn to study and prepare before the night-before-the-test, it won't be as bad. Hope this helped!

You survive by setting up a schedule for yourself.  Each day you set aside time to study and to do work.  This includes weekends.  It will take a lot of perseverance, but it will be worth it in the end.  So, get your game face on and Go for it!  You can do it!
