Aguero may feature against Barcelona
Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero has said that while he has yet to fully recover from a knee injury, he could feature against defending champions Barcelona on Sunday.
Aguero, who joined Atletico since 2006, bruised his knee against Athletic Bilbao last weekend, and it was initially thought that the Argentine would play no part in the game against Barcelona.
But after training this week, the 22-year-old said that he hopes to play a part. “I’m feeling better. I’ve been training all week alone, recovering, but nothing yet is decided," he said. "I have wanted to play, but I’m still having trouble."
While the striker said he is eager to play against the Catalans, he also remained mindful of his team's upcoming league fixtures. "I can’t tell if I’ll be 100 per cent, playing against Barcelona is always a very nice game, however if I’m not well physically
I’m not going to force it, as on Wednesday we have an equally important game versus Valencia.”
Two teams in form
While Atletico suffered a narrow away defeat to Aris Thessaloniki in the Europa League on Thursday, the team have made a promising start to their La Liga campaign, beating Sporting de Gijon and Bilbao so far. Aguero's team are currently top of the league,
with two more goals scored than Valencia in second place.
Barcelona suffered a shock defeat at home to newcomers Hercules last weekend, but Pep Guardiola's team proved their worth in the Champions League on Tuesday, overcoming Greek side Panathinaikos in a resounding 5–1 victory.
Sunday's game thus has all the ingredients for a memorable encounter.
“They are the best team in the world and it will be very complicated," said Aguero, who has scored 55 goals in 145 league appearances for Atletico. "We have to be focused and play seriously. We need to get the ball forward and our speed can do them harm.
This is they way we can win.”
