  1. It will depend if your mobile has it; not all do.

Airplane mode is where the cellular network & data signals are shut off; these are the signals that can disrupt navigational systems with the plane. You'll still need to shut your phone off during taxiing/takeoff/landing, but if your mobile has the airplane mode, set it to that mode before you shut it off. This way, you don't have to go through the process when you turn it back on. Obviously, when you get to the aerobridge after landing, you can set it back to normal mode.

When it's on airline mode, the functions that are shut off are making and receiving calls, sending and receiving text & picture messages, and internet (if your phone does it). Everything else (music, video, etc) can still function without disrupting the plane's systems.

  2. It makes it so you can still play games, use the calendar, etc. but you can't make calls or send texts or use the internet.  In other words, it shuts off all transmit/receive functionality for the phone, so as to not interfere with the airplane's navigation instruments.

  3. Only some phones have this function.

It enables you to use your phone without having a signal which could inter fer with the airplane.
