Airplane question...?

So I was just wondering, how does the airplane slow down from like 350 mph to 0 mph when it lands. I know the things pop up on the wings, but I honestly don't see how that could stop the speed. Thanks!

  1. D.C. is correct, but there are also other aspects to it as well.

    One is that the pilot simply reduces power to descend and land. Less engine power means less speed. Also, airplanes experience aerodynamic drag. As the power is reduced, the air resistance helps to slow the plane down.

    The flaps are not used until the final approach. They actually extend down, not pop up. (The things that "pop up" are called spoilers and can be used to make the aircraft lose altitude faster.) The aircraft has already lost a lot of speed by then. The brakes and thrust reversers are used after the aircraft has touched down.


  2. THE WING FLAPS ARE TO SLOW IT DOWN , AFTER THEY ARE ON THE RUNWAY THEY HAVE BRAKES . SOME OF THE JETS CAN DO A REVERSE THRUST TO SLOW DOWN ( YOU FEEL IT RIGHT AFTER THEY LAND AND HEAR THE JETS REV UP )

  3. when you fly back down to the airport the wings of the planes have these flaps on them and whenever they open it slows down the plane. also they have like turbo things on the bottom of the wing and generates wind. plus whenever you go down the air is less powerful to carry the plane up.and lastly whenever you go and land you dont just straight go to the terminal, if u notice u stop for a while.
