The two points are (-7,-2) and (1,6). How do you express the line going through the two points in standard form (Ax+By+C=0). I keep getting the wrong answer but I can't identify my mistake. Please help this is bugging the heck out of me!

  1. find the slope. did you get 1?

    put (1,6) into point-slope form

    y-6=1(x-1). or just y-6=x-1

    subtract y from each side

    -6=x-y-1

    add six to both sides

    0=x-y+5

    is this the right answer? you might have also gotten -x+y-5=0. that's also correct.

  2. y2 - y1

    ---------- = slope

    x2 - x1

    y - y1 = m ( x - x1)

    Done

  3. First find the slope

    ((-2) - 6)/((-7) - 1)=(-8)/(-8)=1

    slope=m=1

    then find y intercept using the point (1,6) and ur slope

    y=mx +b

    6=(1)(1)+b

    b=5

    then substitute into equation

    y=mx+b

    y=1x+5

    or in other words...

    -1x+1y=5

    -x+y=5

  4. slope = (y2-y1) / (x2-x1)

                (6- -2) / (1 - -7)

                  8 / 8 = 1

    point slope form   y - y1 = m(x-x1)

                              y - 6 = 1 ( x-1)

                              y - 6 = x - 1

                              y = x + 5

         x - y + 5 = 0  when the equation is rewritten in standard form
