Is it a good idea to invest money in independent films? I have approximately $5,000 to invest. I know nothing about investment. Any opinions on the matter would be appreciated.

  2. Wow this is a good question in fact the only reason im even giving my two cents is to see the outcome. Now on to the question as 5 grand wont get you much on the stock market i guess it really depends on how much you think youll get back for this could it win sundance could you see some studio picking it up.........personally i would never do this cuse the risks are gugnumbus but if you belive in the people behind it enough then i guess its possible

Make sure its professional and not just a bunch of pot heads sitting around going ya man thats cool....ive seen it

Make sure you get stuff in writing about the possblity of your returns i.e precentage of the money you could get back if it goes big

    good luck

  3. if you have lots of money to throw out the window then maybe.

there is no way to get rich quick.  it's a c**p shoot to invest money in a film (i mean maybe it really takes off and then you'd be kicking yourself not too). but, if you are like most people, you need to take only an acceptable risk with your money. i would look into a traditional IRA deposit of 4500. that means, you could pick a reasonable mutual fund and invest the proceeds and could elect a deduction of 4500 from your taxes (provided you don't earn too much etc. etc).

  4. if you have $5K to loose then it might be OK?

  5. First, many independent films are independent because of some good reasons: (1) the major studios did not find enough value or profit in the story and concept, or (2) the independents are the artsy kind who want to make a film because they want to make a film, period, or (3) are childish dreamers ("Hey, let's put this together and we'll all be rich!).

I know a couple of guys who are in films. One just finished shooting an independent flick and is awaiting the editing, then it will go on DVD and he will probably put some trailers on Youtube to gather interest and maybe a few theaters will show it, maybe. The other wrote some stuff for a major studio, and while the concept was bought and several scripts written, the studio went after something with more flash and star power, cancelling his project.

Remember when the Darth Vader character said so convincingly, "If you only knew the power of the dark side!"? Well, if you only knew how many independent films are made or wanted to be made and all without a ghost of a chance to turn a profit, then you would leave your money in the bank.

  6. like any investment it depends on the specific thing you are asking about.  It's like asking is it a good idea to invest in Solar - it completely depends on which company...

a movie has really got to be a hit and get picked up to make some money...

  7. NEVER invest in anything you don't completely understand.  And if you don't understand at least the basics of your investment, you should not do it, or learn enough about it to know what you're getting into.

  8. By an S&P index fund.  It won't pay off hugely, but then you probably won't lose much either.  It'll just provide a nice, fairly stable return.

Putting it in a bank CD is even safer, but the returns are lower.
