Alona Bondarenko in the year 2010

The past few years have produced a veritable crop of players on the tennis court, introducing new talent in the sport and giving the game and the players a fresh challenge. One of these players is Alona Bondarenko, born in Kryvyi
Rih in the Soviet Union, now known as Ukraine. The 5ft 6in player is 26 years old and turned pro in 1999, at the age of 15. She is a right handed player, but showcases a double handed backhand which has made her style distinctive. Her coaches are her mother,
Natalia Bondarenko and her husband, Nikolay Dyachok.
Alona Bondarenko’s highest singles career ranking was achieved by her in April 2008, at Number 19. However, she is currently ranked at Number 31 on the singles rankings and Number 39 in the doubles division, by the Women’s Tennis
Association. She plays doubles with her younger sister, Kateryna Bondarenko, and her highest doubles ranking is Number 11. One of her greatest career achievements is her joint victory over Shahar Pe’er and Victoria Azarenka in the women’s singles at the 2008
Australian Open.
The young Ukrainian player’s career record consists of 308 singles victories against 232 defeats. She has achieved 2 WTA titles, and 5 International Tennis Federation titles. In doubles, her career record is 177 victories to 153
upsets. Her titles in this division are 4 WTA titles and 8 ITF ones.
This year, Bondarenko has participated in 15 tournaments to date. She began the year with a victory at the 2010 Moorilla Hobart International where she defeated Shahar Pe’er in the finals, as well as Sybille Bammer, Alize Cornet,
Zheng Jie and Anabel Medina Garrigues. This is her first victory in the three years and her second overall title. After this tournament, she participated in the 2010 Australian Open, where she reached the fourth round by defeating Jelena Jankovic before falling
to Zheng Jie. This is the furthest she has ever gotten in a Grand Slam tournament.
After these two tournaments, Bondarenko suffered early losses at four tournaments; the 2010 Dubai Tennis Championships, 2010 BNP Paribas Open, 2010 Sony Ericsson Open and 2010 MPS Group Championships. She reached the finals of
the 2010 Family Circle Cup before Vera Zvonareva defeated her.
Bondarenko’s next great milestone was covered at the 2010 Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open, where she defeated World Number 2 Caroline Wozniacki. She was then defeated at the third round of this tournament by Li Na. Her next tournament
was the 2010 Polsat Warsaw Open, where she lost in the quarter finals to Greta Arn. Her next tournament was her second Grand Slam of the year, the 2010 French Open, where she lost to Jelena Jankovic in the third round. She was defeated early on in her next
four tournaments at the 2010 Mercury Insurance Open, 2010 Rogers Cup, 2010 Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament and 2010 Western & Southern Financial Group Masters and Women’s Open.
Her last tournament was the 2010 US Open, where she upset Vera Dushevina and Melanie Oudin to get to the third round before being defeated by Francesca Schiavone.
