  1. They stand for Amplitude Modulation & Frequency Modulation.

    As the name denotes , difference is basically what is being modulated keeping other unchanged.

    AM is quite old technology while FM is relatively new. Both have their own merits and limitations, like long distance communication is possible only with AM, while stereo sound can be transmitted by FM only. FM is less effected by noise  

    therefore more clear than AM transmission. Due to these merits of FM over AM, it's more popular and mostly people listen to FM more.
