America and the Phillipines?

why did america want to get tje Phillipines and how did they achieve their goals?

america wanted to be a colonial power llike england, spain, portugal.

the east was the target as there were so many colonial powers present.  spain's power was declining and usa seized that opportunity.  at the same time, usa was trying to diffuse spain's power in south america.  many were fighting for independence at the same time.
