AUSTRALIA all the way baby been to both i have and American mother Aussie father so i spend time in both. i live in Australia and love it to death we have the best Beach's in the entire world our lifestyle is wonderful its laid back and easy going. it is awesome. we love our sport and our food we love going to bush and getting dirty and we love each other. its extremely family orientated it wonderful.

p.s our country isn't just desert. we have beautiful rainforests our most amazing being the daintree in QLD. Australia is very much like CA actually so don't comment on what Australia is like if you've never been here. most people actually live on out gorgeous pristine coastline. americans have a strange view of austrlia if they have never been here.

Well I think I can offer something of an impartial view as I'm neither American nor Australian (I'm British) and I've visited both countries on several occasions.

Overall, I would say I prefer Australia better.  On the whole it is a lot more of a liberal society and I've found the cities to be more cosmopolitan and richer in culture.  I also like the lifestyle more as it tends to be healthier, based on the outdoor, active lifestyle and it's nice to be able to go to a restaurant and have vegetables with your meal!  Australians also seem to have a greater awareness of the rest of the world and the impact their decisions make.  For example, I don't think I've ever met an Australian who hasn't left their country, despite the huge costs their remote location attaches to this.

I'd also like to point out in response to the answer above which says that America is better as it has rainforest, desert, etc. that Australia has all of those things to!
