Do any colleges have rugby teams? Is there a college rugby competition? I heard recently that there is professional mens rugby competition and I was wondering if the pathway to it is the same as other american sports.

  1. There are plenty of colleges that have men and womens clubs.  The sport is growing in the US but it still has a long ways to go.

  2. There are collegiate teams all over the place. Through the sanction of USA Rugby Union, in conjuction with Michelobe beer, They have organized  a semi-professional league known as the USA Rugby Super League (Union style) with 18 teams for the most part clubs compete in tournements all over the country and international and you can find them in just about every city or town.

  3. There are no big academies or professional teams in the U.S to the best of my knowledge. It's still only amateur rugby being played. You may have to travel to Canada, they have a professional set-up and funding. Sorry about that.

  4. There are no professional rugby clubs in America.  Collegiate rugby is club, as opposed to varsity (exept for University of California - Berkley).  There is a national championship for collegiate rugby held annually in Palo Alto, California (Stanford University).

  5. Most larger/major colleges have a Rugby team, but it's not a Varsity sport.  I'm pretty sure NCAA does not regulate Rugby, so there are just club teams (with a few exceptions).

I know at Northwestern University that Rugby is starting to become more popular.  Our team had 40 some players come out to play, and a lot of the other schools in CARFU saw increased numbers.  Maybe it's just a matter of time before it becomes a Varsity Collegiate sport.

And as stated before, there is a national competition, as well as local and regional competitions.
