My amp is getting very hot and I'm not sure if i should keep using it.

I took a thermometer and stuck it on top of the amp and its around 103 degrees. Ohh an it's not a car amp. its a sony stereo/amp....

  1. sounds like one of two things.

1.) you are overloading the amp (speakers are too much for it to push).

2.) amp isn't properly ventilated (needs more air to cool it).

Don't put amplifiers in tight cramped places, they need to breathe.

  2. that's not hot for car radio

but if it is for you, you could try to keep cooler air around it with one of these http://www.sonicelectronix.com/cat_i439_...

  3. Its probably the wires inside your AMP. PRobably one of them are loosening up and giving friction to another wire which isnt suppose to and making it overheat. so you shouldnt use it and go to a stereo place to get it checked.

  4. Make sure there's adequate ventilation around the amp, but that's not really all that hot.

For a typical car audio amp, the rule of thumb is that they're about 50% efficient.  That means for every 100 watts of power sent to the speakers, another 100 watts is turned into heat.  Home audio equipment is typically even less efficient than car equipment.  If you have a 200-watt amplifier, then you have a more-than-200-watt heater.  With amplifiers, that's just the way it works.

  5. u prolly got ur speakers wired at wrong ohmage... but 103 is not that hot... check ohm requirements and make sure ur above level... so if it's 4ohm stable and u have 2 ohms bad... 4 or 8 ohms good... l8r
