Question:

Amtrak on New Years?

I'm going to NYC for New Year's (2nd time going!) from Virginia. Last time I went to NYC for New Years I took a plane which was kinda expensive, and both flights were just 30 minutes. I was thinking about taking a train this time around. the website says it will take about 7 to 8 hours. How reliable is train transportation nowadays? Anything I should look out for?

The route will drop us off right into Penn Station.

  1. Buy tickets ahead of time.   Unfortunately amtrak is pretty expensive on the east coast corridor.   Avoid their fast trains, they are the most expensive.   The regualr ones go fast enough for US tracks.

  2. The trip is usually very relaxing, enjoyable, and the service is excellent but just be advised that because Amtrak operates its intercity trains via the private freight railroads' main lines, delays are almost always commonplace ranging from a half-hour to extra hours (although delays of several hours are uncommon for the most part), so plan your trip accordingly (and, obviously, the holidays are Amtrak's busiest time of year).  In any event, I would personally recommend travel by train but whatever mode you decide on, have a great trip!

  3. ilove amtrak.. but i am old fashion.   however remember trains are notorious for running late.     call amtrak and talk to judy.. the computer.  also get the frequent miles card.. have a good time
