Question:

An foul shot in pool?

I was playing pool with my mate in the pub on saturday. He was on red and I was on yellow. He hit the white ball so hard that it shot his red ball off the table. He then calmly picked the red ball off the floor and put it in the pocket, before placing the white ball in the semi circle saying that I had 2 shots. Isn't this unfair? He said that these were the official rules. Surely if heblasted the ball off the table, he shouldn't get the credit of the same ball being pocketed. Shouldn't I have been given the red ball to place somewhere on the green? We argued for hours after that!

Cheers guys

  1. There must be some big differences between English 8-ball and American 8-ball.  I've never in my life heard of this "2 shots" rule.  I play under BCA (Billiard Congress of America) rules which are world-standardized rules handed down directly from the WPA (World Pool-Billiards Association).  The appropriate rule is as follows:

    -------

4.17  OBJECT BALLS JUMPED OFF THE TABLE

If any object ball is jumped off the table, it is a foul and loss of turn, unless it is the 8-ball, which is a loss of game. Any jumped object balls are not re-spotted.

    -------

So you see, the object ball stays down.  The penalty for a foul is that his opponent (you) gets to take ball in hand anywhere on the table.  You folks don't play on pocket billiards tables, you play on small versions of snooker tables.  You have the rounded pocket openings and snooker-inspired table markings such as the "D".  Instead of numbered stripes and solids, you have reds and yellows.  Just like in America, I'm sure that local "house" rules will differ from pub to pub, but I'm just showing you the world-standardized rules for 8-ball.  If anyone can show me a legitimate link to these rules that I've been hearing, please do so.  M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.

  2. Your friend is right - ok he puts his ball in the pocket but his punishment is for you to take the 2 shots.

    These are UK rules.

  3. i think it goes on or as near to the blackspot.

  4. I have always played ball down the pocket and two shots , but the white stays where it is....

  5. In snooker yes! in Pool, no!

Any ball what leaves the table apart from the cue(white) ball doesn't go back into play, it's a foul carrying 2 shots, if he would of knocked the black ball off the table you would of won!

    Your mate is right...sorry...

He shouldn't of touched the white ball tho...unless it left the table too...if it was still in play it was your choice if you wanted to play your 2 shots from there or move it anywhere behind the line were the D (cemicircle) is!

    I say REMATCH!!!!  ; )

  6. personally I would paly it as his has to put his red back on the table AND you havre too shots, thats the way i always play

  7. Unfortunately it depends on what rules you are playing. In superleague rules the ball goes down the pocket. In 8-ball rules, the ball is placed as near to the black spot as is possible.

You should check the house rules (Usually the pubs display them on the wall somewhere).

  8. If you were playing in Stafford and you are not form that town you Will lose Every game as apparently Stafford has its own rules for Pub pool which basically means they win every time and when questioned you get the answer "Stafford Rules!" bunch of w**kers!. So if you were playing in Stafford or you mate is from there you have no chance. Personally in your situ you should have placed the red ball in a place of your choosing but thems the breaks!

  9. Your friend is right, the ball does go in the pocket but you also get the two shots. Its the same as if you pot a red and the white at the same time, the ball stays down then even though you have fouled.

However, the white shouldn't automatically get put in the D, you have the choice to play it from where it lies (unless the white came off the table as well of course)

  10. i hae been playing league pool for over 20 years, the rules change nearly every season, trying to keep up with the world rules. your friend would have been ok last year but this year the new rule is " if an object ball leaves the playing surface then the ball must be replaced as close to the black spot as possible, if it is not possible to place on the black spot then it goes behind the spot, in a straight line to the other spot thats in the D. and you have 2 shots with which you can place the white in the D.. first shot is a free table. hope that helps

  11. sry m8 yr buddy was right!
