Andy Powell Completes Move to Wasps
Welsh international, Andy Powell, has put an end to the speculation surrounding his future by signing a long-term contract with London Wasps.
Powell says that there was never any doubt in his mind over the club that he would next join and he seems to be looking forward to the new Premiership season.
It's a very good signing for Wasps because they have got a physically huge player when a number of other clubs were shwoing interest in the Welshman. The ex-Cardiff man will give them something they didn't already have and this can only help the team next season.
It's important to remember that Powell has not played in the Premiership before and although he says it's a dream and he wants to get going, it will be very tough for him. It's also important to consider the size and strength of other sides in the division.
Premiership Dream
Powell has described his move to play for Wasps as a dream move into the Premiership. It seems that he believes he is taking a step up in terms of the rugby that he plays and this will only aid his international career.
Wasps will be chuffed to bits because they may have been expecting another club to swoop in with an impressive offer at the final moment. Powell's strength and size are two things that would make him popular in any Premiership team.
He said: "My decision was a pure rugby decision. After all the talk and speculation about where I will be playing, all I want to do now is get my head down, improve as a player and hopefully if selected, play in the World Cup next year for my country."
The real test for this move is going to come when the player gets injured or suspended and then Wasps will be forced to show him faith under his contract while he is not playing. The honeymoon period will last but for how long is not clear.
Keep Reality
It's integral to any chances of success that Wasps keep their feet rooted firmly to the ground. Powell is just a single player and they need to improve upon a variety of areas before they can think about a top place finish next season.
They have to look at the quality of other sides and they have to bring in one or two more names to eradicate any gaps between themselves and other teams. This means the coaches and staff at the club need to work hard to make sure this sort of signing is not a one-off.
The scene is set for any other new player arriving as Powell said: "Wasps have pulled together a great squad, with some great coaches and I think this is an environment in which I will thrive as a player and I hope to do my part to help bring success and trophies to Wasps."
Betting Advice
Powell is going to add a real element of quality to Wasps as a playing rugby side and as a club. However, it's important you remember that he is only one man and the success of the club will depend on more players arriving during the close season.
Powell is a big unit and is not likely to romp forward scoring points and tries. Don't waste your time and money on betting on him to do so because it just won't happen. If you like these bets then stick with the wingers and the kickers in the team who will accumulate more points over the course of a season.
