Hello People.

I'm Doing Some Science Coursework On Animal Testing. I Have To Writ Different Arguments On Why People May Be For/Against Animal Testing. Could Any Of You Tell Me If You Are For/Against Animal Testing And Why You Are? Just To Help Me Out Please??

Much Thanks..x

  1. I'm against it

reasons: The basic idea for me is ludicrous, why test drugs and things on animals when they are being designed for human use, i know some animals are closely related and share lots of DNA with humans, but still it wont necessarily affect animals and humans in the same way.

the treatment of the animals is wrong, they just take them out of the wild to test on, what happened to preservation of animals, and although it isnt widely known animals do have rights to be safe and free.

the idea that they are used for make up is so wrong, if they want to see what it will look like on something, why not use the species it is designed for.

Testing that goes wrong is another strong reasons, they are just killing animals because their designs didnt work, animal species are not meant to see if they will survive an experiment.

    hope i helped!

p.s i do know that animal testing has resulted in maintaining the lifestyle of some people such as diabetics who rely on the insulin from pigs, which i am not against in a way, as very soon scientists are synthesising insulin from recombinant DNA (genetic engineering) which wont need the needless slaughtering of animals for medicine.

  2. I am AGAINST animal testing for the following reasons:

    * Animals who do not deserve to suffer are made to suffer in the form of physical and emotional abuse including isolation, deprivation and physical pain e.g. kittens blinded, rats suffering seizures, mice with tumours the size of their body, force feeding of chemicals ETC.

    * Animal testing doesn't always produce safer medicine since many people have died from drugs and treatments administered after they were tested on animals.

    * Animals are not just tested for medical reasons (see further below)

    * It's suggested that a percentage as high as and over 90%of drugs tested on animals go on to fail in clinical trials (although you'd have to check this figure out for sure) and its questionable whether all these animals should suffer and die for a mere 10% success rate

However, I would be for animal testing when:

    * the testing is in the pursuit of finding cures for life threatening diseases because in my opinion, it is more important to save a human life than an animal life

As you can see, there is more bad than good in my opinion

    see: http://www.rds-net.org.uk/pages/home.asp...

fFrthermore, there are strict ethical guidelines keeping animal suffering to a minimum in the pursuit of scientific and medical development although it is questionable whether any suffering should be caused to an animal when testing makeup, agricultural chemicals, household products, pesticides, food additives etc. and things not necessary for human survival. It is also questionable whether these ethical guidelines are really followed since there have been many cases where animals have been very cruelly treated in the name of some very questionable 'science'

There are three main viewpoints against animal testing headed by three prominant believers of these viewpionts which I will sum up briefly:

Tom Regan maintains that animals have moral rights (animal rights) because they are beings with desires and self-consciousness and thus have an inherent value meaning these animals possess rights. This standpoint still recognises a clear ethical difference between killing animals and killing humans where saving a human life excuses killing animals.

Bernard Rollin maintains that any benefits to humans do not outweigh animal suffering. Thus we have no moral right to use any individual animal in ways that do not benefit that individual animal

Peter Singer, mainatains that no other species, whether their suffering is important for human survival, should be considered for testing things of human intereat.

All of the above aruments are not very popular. If anything, I would say I was in agreement with the first viewpoint

Ask the experimenters why they experiment on animals, and the answer is: 'Because the animals are like us.' Ask the experimenters why it is morally OK to experiment on animals, and the answer is: 'Because the animals are not like us.' Animal experimentation rests on a logical contradiction."

    -Professor Charles R. Magel

Alternatives to animal testing include reduction, replacement and refinement. I suggest you look these up
