What do you do if an animal won't take the anethstetic? I am not going to/ giving ANY animals anethstetic, I was just curious and am not licensed on animals in any way other than owning them.

  1. I have anesthetized a few animals.  Of course they object, especially wild animals they are clueless.  They have to be restrained.  Not only for the well being of the animal but also the people.

Domestic animals that have associated with humans for a long time just accept it, they are basically clueless also.  It is the second or third time that a domestic animal has to be  anesthetized where a problem might arise.  Then it will be restrained.

  2. I'm not sure that I understand what you mean by "won't take the anesthetic."  Do you mean that they jump around, bite, etc. so that it is difficult to GIVE them the anesthetic (usually by injection)?  Or that they are trying very hard to stay awake after the anesthetic is given?

Both things do happen, but veterinarians and veterinary technicians have considerable training and experience in anesthetizing animals, so they usually can cope with the difficulties.  Appropriate restraint is key, as are thorough knowledge of doses, and how to recognize signs of problems (and correct them when they arise, infrequently.)  Lots of animal owners fear anesthesia.  So do some human patients, for that matter.  But generally the anesthetic is quite safe, and it may be safer than the stress of NOT using it.  For animals, that's safer for both the animal and its handlers.
