  1. try giving it time, it is either just not used to you, has never been tamed, etc.

it depends though, if i were you and i was getting it from someone who didnt want it anymore i wouldnt get it probably. (someone else will)

if its from a shelter then i would save it.

  2. Try and see if you can find a more friendly bird, but know that part of getting a bird is knowing that you have to work with it to get it to its behavior that you would like for a pet. You will have to work with any bird on not biting. You have to spend time with the bird and be patient on the learning process. Birds take work, but once you teach it what is okay and isn't, they make a great companion.

All the birds may seem to react in that biting way, because they have not been worked with and taught that, that is not okay. It is a natural defense.

  3. Hi,

First thing you don't let it bite you... Easier said then done, right....

So you have a new bird and it bites...... With a bird this is a learn behavior, don't let it pratice anymore. It will always bite for a reason, it is up to you to discover the reason and then avoid giving him a reason. Bird have a long life and you have a lot of time. So take it slow and easy. He does not have to step up the first day or the second day either. Set back and watch him, talk to him in a soft voice, don't make any loud noise or sudden movements around him. Give him a chance to settle in first. Provide to him that you mean him no harm..

After a couple of days of this you should know what food he likes the best. Like Sunflower seed maybe? You take all this food away from him never ever give it to him again, execpt from our hand only. He must take it from your hand. Make him reach through the cage bars and take it out of your hand. Do not allow him the chance to bite you. Remember biteing is a learn behivor. This step may take a few days, give it time, he will be taking it from your hand soon.

Now start opening the cage door and give it to him but only if he comes over to you. Do not chase him around the cage. After this you should be able to get him to step on your free hand. once again use the treat hand to get him to move to the other hand, do not chase him around the cage....

This is only the begining when you deal with birds aways use postive things, like treats when he is good, never punish him or scream at him. Go to the library and get a book on clicker training,

Good Luck with your new friend
