Question:

Ants- What pesticide to use?

I live in a townhome community and ants come from every where no matter how much I spray. I do use a general ants spray but I was wondering if anyone could recommend a product that really kills for days after I spray.

Is there anything safe for animals that will actually kill the next group that walks buy?

Thanks

  1. DO NOT SPRAY!!!!

You need to find an agent that the ants carry home and feed their little babies. When you spray you are only killing the females who are gathering food items and more keep coming. There are many commercial agents like the little discs that you lay around the house that they pick up and take back to the nest.

You have to keep a clean house and seal up any holes you may have. You can follow their movements to find their entrance trail. You can even follow them back to their mound too and drop a disc right there if you want.

Generally, pets don't mess with the discs. But, to be safe, you can keep them on counters away from your pets. Maybe lure the little guys up with some sugar.

It will take a few days to a week to see results so don't get impatient and start spraying.

  2. To keep ants from coming inside your house you should put normal table salt around doors and window sills.  Use the salt around all thresholds.  Triazion is a good pesticide to kill ants and it also kills other pest bugs as well. Hope that helps =]

  3. I use those little ant hotels.  They work really well.

  4. Diatomaceous Earth

Kills Ants, Fleas, Ticks, Cockroaches, Earwigs, Slugs, Beetles, Flies, Silverfish, Bed Bugs and many other pests, naturally, without harsh synthetic chemicals!

click on the link below you can find it at a garden center or feed store

  5. you can use any of the general insecticide products that are premixed and just attach to the hose...treat around the exterior and flower beds of the building...you should be able to locate the various nests and just soak then for a second.  For the inside terro is a pretty good starting bait to feed to the foragers and they will take it back to the colony if the exterior treatment did not get to them. Anything you get will more than likely be a pyrethroid and will be 50-close to 200 times less toxic than table salt so your pets should be fine, just keep them inside to let the exterior treatment dry to be safe.   Do note though there are a number of different ants they could be and there is not a general one treatment fix all type of solution and any of the exterior sprays you get over the counter will have a short lived residual though if you can cut down on the outside colonies next to the building you probably will cut down on the ant activity you have inside

  6. good old fashioned aardvark, they are furry and fluffy and soft and they eat ants.
