Any Cali surfers out there?

Question

Hi guys! I need help with a character I'm writing about. He's a surfer from California and I'm trying to make his character believable as such by his conversations and maybe a few surf scenes or so. My boyfriend's a surfer, but he's an east coast surfer. He's helping me out a bit, but are there any surfers from California who can help me with lingo and what surfers look for and talk about when they're actually out on the water. Also, any "surf culture" notes will be good. Thanks a ton!

i dont know what this dudes r saying but arounds newport beach all us guys use words like......gnarly...mellow epic.dude.chick.sick... raunchy.....thos r just sumwords!!

Hey! im a so cal surfer. huntington beach. first of all surfers usually shouldn't be talking when surfing because they need to concentrate on the waves. Plus they should not be too close to each other. Like the guy before me rent a movie. Blue Crush or check out the quicksilver and roxy surf teams on their websites. i guesss guy surfers say dude a lot and wierd stuff like that.

I surf up and down the East Coast, West Coast, Gulf, Hawaii, and other parts of the world on a regular basis.  Surfers speak and act just about the same everywhere.   I'm surprised you would think otherwise.  Use your boyfriend as a reference.  If you are looking for culture articles, check out the surf library.

Rent "The Endless Summer II"  and model your character off of the shorter blonde guy.  That's pretty much how every one here acts, (the surfer guys at least)
