hey all

im from uk currently at university!! but im thinking of not choosing my career path (sport) and becoming a commercial airline pilot!! i think it is such an honourable/proud job to have, i would like a challenge. the thing is, im great at english, but im pretty poor at maths/physics, is there a lot involved? also if it is just a case of putting in the hard work, learning everything that's fine with me. im not the most intelligent person, so i really dont know if i have the brains todo the job, even though i heard you dont have to be that bright? someone told me 10% is maths/physics, rest is just like learning to drive a car? but it takes just a little bit longer? lol thanks!

  1. If you have the drive and ambition to do it you can. With becoming a commerical pilot its more about your drive and will to do it than anything. If you are determined to do it you can. I know many people who worked very hard, then gave up when it got a little tough. But you can push through it and do it. One thing you will notice among commerical pilots is that they are all very determined, hard working people and they have a love and passion for what they are doing.

  2. Good gcse maths / physics plus good mental arithmatic would be the minimum. A level maths / phisics would be useful but not essential.

Your main hurdle will be money. Where will you find the £70000 to £90000 you will have to pay for your initial training and first type rating (university student loans pale to insignificance by comparison).

Pay upwards of £100 grand pa? Sure a Line Training Captain or Type Rating Examiner can make that kind or money, but in the frst few years of your career your pay will be very poor so you will have to consider carefully when / if you expect to make a return on your investment.

Will you get a full 35 to 40 year career in the airline industry? What will happen to the industry in 25 to 30 years time when oil will be getting scarse?

  3. There ia alot of math it's a must.  I did a whole repoert for school.  The pay is good though alot of times upward of 100g

  4. Hi

C'mon do you seriously think that people who fly aircraft for a career would spend their time on a site like this?

    Ray. West York's. U.K.

  5. Being good at math and physics is a myth.  I have never had a physics class in my life and the math is very basic.

If you can drive a manual transmission car you can learn to fly a plane.

The hardest part is all the memorization that you need to do.  Learning all of the rules, airspace, limitations etc.  Nothing an average person couldn't do.

    Good Luck

  6. if you like learning drills its the job for you

procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure procedure

  7. Why do you show a Latvian flag?? I live in Latvia and am a Pilot but looking at your answers??? is good spelling a thing of the past.

I learned to fly thanks to British Taxpayers, and the Royal Navy, then F/O with BA, long haul.

It can be done, do what I did , armed forces offer the best training and you are almost guaranteed work when you leave.
