  1. Getting started

Start your packed lunch off with some starchy carbohydrate to give you long-lasting energy. For a change from ordinary bread you could try:

    pittas

    bagels

    baguettes

    ciabatta

    bread rolls

    wraps

Make some of them wholemeal or multigrain, or use a mixture of wholegrain and white.

    And then

Add some protein, such as lean meat, fish or cheese and a few vegetables and fruit.

Here are a few filling ideas to try, or you could make up your own combinations:

    Cheddar cheese with apple slices

Cooked chicken or turkey, mustard, tomatoes, and lettuce

    Cottage cheese and dried apricots

Tuna, cucumber, green pepper, sweetcorn and tomato

    Mozzarella with grilled peppers

Brie and cranberry sauce or jam

You could also raid the fridge for leftovers ' some foods taste just as good cold ' such as pizza or pasta. Cook extra pasta, couscous or rice. Mix it with cut-up vegetables, a few nuts or tuna, then just add your favourite dressing.

Take a tempting dip, such as houmous, cottage cheese or plain yoghurt with some red or green pesto stirred in for extra interest; or you could chop an apple into a mashed can of tuna. Have some sticks of celery, carrots or pepper, or some cauliflower and broccoli with the dips.

Add some fruit to help fill you up (and help you reach your 5-a-day). Try to have a different type every day - you don't always need to pick an orange and an apple, why not try kiwi, mango, grapes, pear, chunks of melon, or small packets of dried fruit?

    And to drink

The best drink is water or milk, but you could try diluted pure fruit juice, yoghurt drinks or smoothies if you prefer, or to make a change.

And don't forget to keep your packed lunch cool. Use a frozen carton of juice or icepacks to keep it cool, or find somewhere cool at school to keep your lunchbox.

    lunch on a stick

    Ingredients

For the turkey and cheese kebab:

    cooked turkey, chopped

    sliced cheese

    cucumber, chopped

    cherry tomatoes

    For the fruit kebab:

    strawberries, halved

    peach or nectarine, chopped

    kiwi, chopped

    apple, chopped

    dried apricot, chopped

    Method

    1. Thread your chosen foods onto a skewer until full, leaving just enough room at each end to hold it.

  2. TRY GOING TO YOUR GROCERY STORE OR WAL-MART FOOD SECTION AND YOU MIGHT FIND SOME MICROWAVEABLE CHINES FOOD, I TRIED THEM AND THEIR PRETTY GOOD THEY ALSO HAVE EGG ROLLS. LOOK IN THE DELI DEPT. THEY HAVE A VARIETY OF OPTIONS.

  3. Toasted ham sandwhich, an apple or other fruit, crisps and something sweet for dessert, like a chocolate bar. Pretty easy and fast to make.

  4. 1.Sandwiches

    2.Wraps

    3.Subs

    4.Pastas

  5. Nothing brilliant, but I liked to make fruit salad and pasta salad and put it in little plastic containers along with a sandwich for my kids.  They liked just about anything I made.

They had lunch bags with those frozen packs to keep everything cool til lunch.  Then when the weather  got cold, I would make homemade soup and put in a soup thermos with packages of peanut butter and cheese crackers, saltines or maybe some leftover spaghetti.   Those wide mouth thermoses we used were really good.

At times I put hot chocolate in a regular thermos.

Now my grand daughters like turkey sandwiches with  a piece of fruit and a bag of chips.  They buy their drink at school.  They make their lunches and put them in the fridge the night before and don't have to make them in the morning.  One day when one of them was sick, I ate their lunch to see if it was good, I was convinced it must me awful made the night before.  It was delicious,  I was so happy, I thought my daughter was mean to them to have to eat a sandwich made the night before.

I always liked lunch, it was my favorite period at school.I still eat tuna sandwiches with tomato soup when I'm lonely.  Which is alot lately, why don't you kids call your grandma?   Love you, Grandma
