I will be in Rome in February. I'm looking for a day trip that I can reach, enjoy, and return from within 8-9 hours.

  1. Hello,

There are several day trips you can make from Rome.  The easiest one is to Ostia Antica.  It is about a half hour outside of Rome towards the coast.  Another is Tivoli.  This is a great daytrip and will only take a few hours.  Longer day trips include Florence which will take about 1.5 hours by train and Naples/Pompeii which will take 2 hours to Naples and another half hour to Pompeii.  These are easy daytrips.

To get to Ostia Antica, take the metro to the piramide station and change trains to one heading to Lido. Get off at the Ostia Antica station.  It is really easy.

You can get to Tivoli by bus.  It takes about 35-45 minutes.

For Florence just buy your ticket at the termini station and hop on the train.  There are a number of trains that leave everyday and in February you should not have a problem booking one last minute.

For Naples/Pompeii buy your ticket at the termini station.  You want to get off at Naples.  From that station, go downstairs to the commuter line and take it to the Pompeii scavi stop. From there it is a three minute walk to the site.

February is a great time to go to Rome, the crowds are less and the weather is cool.  You will find the days in the 50's or 60's.  Dress in layers to be comfortable.

  2. you should go to Pompeii

  3. February is not the best weather to travel in.  Orvieto is a good day trip from Rome.  Assisi would take more than 8-9 hours depending on your mode of transportation.

  4. Tivoli and Hadrian's Villa is a good day trip -- it's only about 45 minutes

  5. go to Florence! it should only take about 2.5 hrs by train. you'll have enough time to go to the musuems and do a quick tour. i'd suggest the Uffizi then maybe a quick stroll to the Duomo for a photo op before heading back to Rome (i'd stay longer tho!!). enjoy!!! :-)

  6. Naples is only 2 hours away by train and it is astonishingly beautiful. Also, the climate will be warmer than Florence or other cities more north of Rome.

Mind your wallet though, and don't bring expensive watches or jewels, as that would put you at risk.

Don't forget to take a pizza when you are there. It is different from the one you can find in Rome, and delightful.

Orvieto is also a good day trip, but it will be freezing in February.
