So, I'm just getting into anime. When I was younger I really enjoyed Sailor Moon, Pokemon, ect. I also really loved Dragon Ball Z. Recently I fell in love with Avatar. I've always kinda doodled and drawled too. Now I'm realizing that there's this whole other world out there, shows I haven't even heard of. And I'm realizing that there are some really dedicated anime fans out there. So, for you anime fans, where would you suggest I start? What shows should I look into? I wanna understand the whole japanese culture of it too, any suggestions as to where I could learn about that? What would be could to start drawling..anything and everything? Any good web-site ideas? And anything I left-out, tell me too, XD. So yeah, basically looking for the low-down on anime. =]

  2. You should definitly watch fullmetal alchemist(but the manga is waaaay better!) The fma manga helps me get better, cuz Hiromu(hiromi) Arakawa is an amazing artist, and I look at how she positions people and such to see how I should draw characters in a certain position,so the manga could help you with your drawing

Xxxholic(its not what it sounds like lol)

    Fruits basket

    Death note

    Wolfs rain

    Chobits(chi is sooo adorable!)

I'm not sure if its an anime yet,but Bizenghast is a good+creepyish manga(also sorta messed up...(O.o)

    Inuyasha

Skip•Beat anime is starting in october...

    Ouran high school host club

Millenium snow(idk if its an anime yet,cuz I prefer to read manga...)

    Maybe Full moon o sagashite

    Tsubasa resovoir chronicles

    That's all I can think of for now,but there are a lot more...c'mon brain!!think!

s for the japanese culture, I know that if you read some mangas that belong to a certain brand(shonen viz and tokyopop don't do this usually, while shojo beat mangas and kodansha usually do)

Devianart.com is a good place to see fanart, and you can psot your drawings on it,too. There are a ton of anime sites you can join,I think one of em is like animeclub.com(but I'm not sure!) And a lot of the mangas/animes have websites too,and if you don't understand something in an anime or manga, you can ask on here or I can help you out,or join an anime site and ask on there, there are also discussions of animes/mangas on most anime sites.

  3. Well, i'd start out with bleach, maybe even full metal alchemist. Then move onto d. gray-man, but before the year is out watch death note, if you like it, then watch code geass both seasons, Also One Piece is a good beginer, but it has so many episodes (around 370) Naruto is ok, but watch the shupudden its better.

  4. Um... well the anime you said (Sailor Moon, avatar) are more like a kid's first anime. While you're still learning, start with something more tame like Fruit's Basket (A family who turn into animals when they're hugged by the opposite s*x) or Ranma 1/2 (Guy turns into girl when splashed with cold water, his dad turns into a panda when splashed with cold water).

The difference is that in Japan, anime is for all ages, while in America animation is usually for children (with some exceptions like Family Guy or South Park). There are plenty of "heavier" anime with nudity, guns, blood, cursing, smoking, violence, etc. If you want a sample of a "medium" anime, watch some of the English Naruto episodes. The translation (the Dub) cuts out a lot of the bad language and some of the blood, so Naruto is a tamer anime. For a heavier anime, watch BLEACH or Death Note.

Some common terms you'll hear are dubs and subs. Dubbed anime is the english version. The japanese voices are taken out and dubbed over with english voice actors (VAs). The companies that do this may also edit the scenes to fit whatever their target audience is. Companies such as 4Kids have a target audience of 7-12 year olds. Others like VIZ have an older target audience. Many people do not like 4Kids because they edit so much from the script and airbrush a lot from the artwork, but they're just trying to make the anime fit their target rating of Y7.

Subbed anime are the original japanese episodes with subtitles. Many people prefer subs because its how the show was meant to be seen, and there's no editing or toning it down. Plus, dubs take a while to make, and usually a whole show is not dubbed for years. Usually a whole show is already subbed, so you can sit down and watch the whole thing. However, if you want to watch subs you have to be able to read pretty fast ^.^

I hope this helped, and if you need clarification on anything, feel free to chat.

  5. Do you have On Demand? My cable system does and I just watch whatever, provided I can get the first episodes (playing catchup in a pain)
