  1. I did at 31 weeks exactly to the day, due to preeclampsia. my daughter was 2lbs 11 oz they gave me steroids to build her lungs. She was able to breath on her own from the beginning. she had to stay in the nicu until she was 34 weeks, which is pretty fast because most babies can't nipple until 35-36. She is such a trooper though. she is now 1 mo and 1 day adjusted age (from her due date) she is 8 1/2 lbs and is amazing.

here are some pics of my angel at birth and yesterday

Is your friends baby a boy or girl? Black or white? wierd questions but for some reason actually makes a diff. girls do better than boys, black girls do the best, and white boys are the weakest. just some interesting NICU facts.

  2. My husband's co-worker had a little girl at 6 months. She was very tiny but she was put into the incubator for awhile. She is fine and living today. That was 8 years ago, bywayway! I wish her well.

  3. my husbands aunty did...she was 30 weeks though...baby was fine they put it in intensive care for a while just to make sure everything was alright she is a healthy 5 year old now very small for her age but healthy!! some women have given birth at 21 weeks so no worries! sounds like baby wil be fine!

  4. My niece had a baby on January 7th, he was 28 weeks gestation. She had toxemia. He wasnt due til March 23rd. he weighed 1 lb. and 14 ounces. He was kept in the NICU til he was 4 lbs. He is 7 months now and weighs 14 lbs and is progressing way better than most premature babies. Just make sure she is in a very good hospital that deals with lots of premature babies. We are in a small city and they had to life flight my niece to Tulsa ok. to deliver.

  5. My cousin was at 32 wks and her son spent 4 wks in the NICU but he is now turning 2 years old and doing really great, you can't tell he was born that early.

  6. Been there done that, I was on magnesium sulfate for 3 days to "space out contractions" but I still had them fairly close and felt each and one of them for those days! I couldn't eat either! Grrr. I know she must be pretty uncomfortable right now but such is life. She should be getting steroid shots for her baby's lungs just in case her baby is born now but the shots have to be 2 days apart so I hope she already has the first one and baby waits another 48 hours.

My son was born at 32 weeks and is 100% healthy and actually ahead of himself and most normal 9month birth babies.

If she gives birth now her baby will go to the NICU (Newborn Intensive Care Unit) until baby can breath and eat on his own which usually is about a month, that's the way it was with me. He will be closely monitored so if anything goes wrong there will be people to aid him right away. There are always risks with babies born early and each week that the baby is early makes a big difference but if her baby is born now then chances of it surviving are very promising and the chances of him being a "normal" baby are very very high too, the doctors will tell her of all the risks the baby can have if born now like respiratory problems and whatnot but more than likely he will be absolutely fine! Sometimes coming early means that ... you are early! and nothing else. Sometimes coming early can complicate things a little bit, but they usually catch on very fast and think of it this way, if a baby gets breast milk being so young ... their brain will develop faster!

  7. i gave birth to my daughter at 35 weeks because of preeclampsia, everything was fine, she only had to stay in the N.I.C.U for 5 days total, just to be sure she can sleep in a crib and keep her temp, she did NOT have to be on oxygen or anything. she only weighed 4 lbs 7 oz but i also had trouble gaining weight and did not have an appetite. so i think that everything will be fine with your friend, BEST WISHES. oh, and my daughter will be 2 in sept and is doing GREAT!!!!!! lol besides her terrible twos already she can sing her ABC's and can count to 10, and loves the i love you song from Barney and can sing it,

  8. I was born at 30-31 weeks gestation weighing 4 pounds 8 ounces.  I was in the NICU for about 2 weeks but was able to breathe on my own.  A feeding tube was inserted right under my belly button and the doctors needed to make an incision on my right ankle to "open" some of my veins that weren't getting blood the way they needed to.

After 2 weeks in the NICU I was able to lift and support my head a bit. For the first 3-4 months I needed to be fed every 2-3 hours around the clock in order to ensure proper weight gain. " By the time I was 6 months old I was almost developmentally caught up with all of the physical milestones.  By 12 months I was learning how to walk and essentially "caught up" and surpassing normal development.

I excelled well at school and loved learning while I was growing up.  I was tongue tied, which my mom chose not to correct.  This led to some orthodontic problems later, but the correction for tongue ties is really easy and painless.  I also have allergies and asthma, but the source of those are always going to be debated and aren't necessarily because I was a preemie.   I'm 22 now, married, have a 16 month old son, and am working on finishing up my degree in English Education.  My hubby and I just bought our home last year and are doing relatively well.  :)
