Question:

Anyone had a Cytotec procedure?

After weeks of impatiently waiting for a final result on whether my pregnancy was healthy or not, it looks like my HCG levels are dropping significantly and they expect me to miscarry. I'm very sad about this, but have also had the time to come to terms with it. I was only 7 weeks along and I know that this was just not meant to be - and we'll try again soon! :)

Because this was my first pregnancy and I'm in the dark about so many things, can anyone give me advice on the procedure called Cytotec? This is the option the OB has given me, aside from a D&C or to waiting to pass the tissue on my own.

I will be waiting a few weeks, regardless of which procedure I choose, because I'd prefer to pass it on my own - but with no symptoms of miscarriage whatsoever, I'm afraid it might take awhile.

Does anyone have any advice?

Thank you!

  1. you say they expect you to miscarry?? is the baby still alive? if so id wait it out doctors arent always right...good luck!! and im so sorry for you!! that must be horrible!

  2. Cytotec is actually a medication used for GI issues but has been found to cause miscarriage in pregnant women.  OBGYNs have found it useful in early pregnancy termination.  I used it after a miscarriage to expel the remaining "products of conception".  I had a little cramping.  I would rather use the cytotec than the D&C (would be a last resort).  The plus for the D&C would be to get it over with so that you do not have to worry about being out and start cramping and bleeding. Also askytour OB about genetic testing to find out what happened with the pregnancy.  A sample could be collected during a D&C.  I had 2 miscarriages and with the last one I actually collected the sample myself (not suggesting this I am an L&D nurse so could tolerate it).  Everything came back normal so the pregnancy losses were a fluke.  Stay positive and try again as soon as your OB gives you the go ahead.  I am so sorry for your loss and I know exactly what you are going through.  Good luck hope my comments were useful!  Chrissy

  3. I wrote an article a while back on Cytotec and how some women were using this medication to abort.

I am going to be honest with you.  After all the stories I heard from so many women I would not use this medication.  They all stressed how painful this was.  I have heard from more than one who said if they knew how painful it was that they would have chosen another option.

If your interested heres the article.  Below the article I have had several women comment with their experiences.  I dont know if it would help you but why dont you look it over and check out the comments.
