Anyone know a lot about insects?

There was a strange flying insect in my house the other day and I can't identify it. It was about an inch long, jet black, wasp-like wings, and a body that was kinda fuzzy and looked like an over-sized mosquito. It also had what looked like a very flexible stinger... whatever it was, it was also very aggressive. I'm just really curious as to what it was and I don't know a whole lot about insects.

Anyone have an idea what it might have been?

Or does anyone know of a useful site to find out? Because I'm getting sick of google...

Could be a horntail.  They are actually harmless and what you are seeing is not a stinger, but an ovipositor for Eggs.
