i have a 2001 mercury cougar, the check engine light keeps coming on and telling me theres a missfire in cylinder 6 adn cylinder 2, so i replaced all 6 plugs in the car, and the light is back on saying cylinder 6 and 2 are missfiring again, today im going to replace the wires for the plugs and see if that changes anything, any other things that should be looked at for fixing this matter? its an 01 mercury cougar 6 cylinder 2.5 liter engine...

  1. if cylinder 6 and 2 share a coil pack then probably your problem. could also be wires so you should change them while your at it.

  2. The pistons may have problems.

  3. You are on the right track.  Faulty wire(s) or coil.  I think that 2 and 6 fire off the same coil.  Replace the wires as a set.  Check the coils secondary and primary resistance.  Sometimes coils that test o.k. don't work.

  4. 1.plugs...2 wires...3 cap/rotor if u have them..4 coil[s]

  5. if its misfiring on 6 and 2 id check coil pack to see if they are paird together. If seen alot of fords with bad coil packs latly. but replace your wires anyway because if they were bad thats what could have wrecked your coil pack

  6. You seem to be on the right track as this is what I would do also.  Next step is to go back even further.  Not sure about your specific car but distributor cap and rotor is normally next.  Your car may have something more modern though like a modular pack.

  7. to be on the safe side do a compression test and you will know for sure .good luck.

  8. If the misfire is on 2 and 6 the only common element is the coil pack for the # 2 and 6 cylinder.

I would be very surprised if was something else, it is fairly easy to change as well.

    Good Luck!

  9. your on a good start but remember to reset or erase the obd when you fix something it will reset itself evetually but not imeadiatly.

  10. A good start.. you could also have a fuel blockage or problem with the injection jets that causes pre-ignition (the fuel goes in at the wrong time and ignites from the extra hot surfaces).  Check to see if your injectors are plugged or need cleaning.

  11. sounds like the wires or coil packs what the other ind of the spark plug wire plugs in to if there is more than one coil you can try switching them and see if the misfire moves to different cylinders if you still have a problem after replacing the wire you should check the compression or the injectors you can check the injectors easily by putting a screwdriver against the injector and the other end against your ear you should hear a clicking sound on all the injectors

  12. check the cylinders them sleves that might be the problem.
