Question:

Anyone who has moved to Canada?

I am currently living in Australia, where I have for the last 21years, and I'm moving to Calgary, Canada with my wife next year, who is originally from Calgary. I was wondering what is involved with the process of moving there, on the Visa side of things. Is it complicated? Do I get instant residency because my wife is Canadian..?? Both countries being under the Commonwealth make a difference?

If anyone has gone through or is going through this process, could you please tell me your experience with it all.

Thank you :)

  2. You need to apply for immigration status with your wife as a sponsor. She will be responsible for guaranteeing your costs when you arrive.

  3. My aunt married a canadian guy, she is still on her process of getting the residency (this was a year ago). U need to do some uhm social work, then u have to stay in the territory for a certain amount of days, without leaving! And after that u r on ur way. I suggest going to an embassy oor something,

  4. No, you will not get instant residency. Commonwealth membership is irrelevant. Canada and Australia are both sovereign nations with their own rules and regulations.

If you want to officially move to Canada from Australia, please note that it is a long process and not necessarily all that simple. Have you spoken to anyone at the nearest Canadian embassy or consulate? If not, you better get over there pronto and get the paperwork going. It will take a long time.

A friend of ours laboured under the misapprehension that he could bring his non-Canadian fiancee over to Canada in one fell swoop. That was not possible and it took him about 2 years before she could even come over. She is still a permanent resident but not yet a citizen.
