I must observe two different species of Primates for my Anthropology 01 class that I will be taking this fall. I'd like to be certain that Chimpanzees and Gorillas are seperate and distinct species, can anyone out there validate that they are? Thanks very much!

  1. yes

  2. yes, they are two different species.

the Chimpanzee is the species Pan troglodytes

the Gorilla is the species Gorilla gorilla

  3. Are wolves and foxes different species? That's about how related gorillas and chimps are. If you knew the definition of species, it should be evident that they are not the same.

In observing them, you should be able to see that they are very different. Gorillas are larger, and ground-dwelling. Chimps are smaller, lighter, and spend more time in trees. Gorillas are herbivores, chimps are omnivores. Gorilla troops have a dominant male leader, chimps have a more complex social structure. Gorilla males have, for their body size, small testicles, whereas chimps, conversely, have large ones. There are tons of differences evident - even to those not knowing the definition of "species."

  4. Are you kidding? Please tell me this isn't a college level class..that you didn't manage to get into college without knowning that Chimpanzees and Gorillas are, indeed, two different species of primates. Jesus, no wonder the educational system in this country is a laughing stock to other countries. This is what comes from refusing to teach proper science in highschool.

Here you go, fundamentalist freaks...the result of your fear of teaching evolutionary FACT leads to a complete lack of proper Biology education. Congratulations.
