No.

Never were.

They are also very few in number, these days.  Hobos (shortened from "Hoe Boys") were not bums.  They were vagabonds, most victims of circumstance during the Great Depression.. While traveling, they would work their way from here to there and pick up a nickle or two, sweeping depots or hoeing someones garden:  Hence: "Hoe Boys."

Many travel by freight train today as a last resort, just trying to get from point "A" to point "B."

The rest are usually on the lam from the law, as burglars or such or even rapists and serial killers.  These are the good folks of the loosely organized group "Freight Train Riders of America."  These folks make the h**l's Angels look like teddy bears.  They will happily slit your belly or throat for any water you may be carrying.  And, they are known to mark their territory, just as the hobos of the past did.  If you come across the tag FTRA, best to turn around.

The misguided who think that riding the rails today parallels the idyllic notion of romance and adventure are fodder for these animals.  There's no resemblance to that era today.  It is freezing cold or boiling hot, filthy, dirty and extremely dangerous place to be.

Just one more good reason to stay the h**l away from the rails.
