  1. One thing to take into consideration - is there a shop in your are that will work on it and how difficult will it be for you to get parts.

Other than that, I've only read good reviews.

  2. yes, KTMs are very good bikes but as others stated, they can be a bit more expensive to purchase.  Part of the reason they are more expensive is they come with all the higher performance parts from the factory, where the j*p bikes would require having the higher performance parts added on, or extra cost IF you wanted the higher end suspension, brakes, hydraulic clutch, etc. ... these plus other high perf. parts come stock on a KTM.  it's almost that simple.  there isn't a KTM dealer in all cities like the big 4 j*p bikes, which can be difficult to get parts quickly.

also need what type of riding you are wanting to do???

as for a good bike for a beginner your size, I would opt for something like a KTM 250 EXC RFS (racing four stroke version, not the 2 stroke) for trails, cross country, harescrambles with some MX thrown in.   the EXC line has a softer suspension setup, wider factory gearing, headlight, tail light, electric start  ... what I think of as the enduro / harescramble version, racing caliber trails bike.

the MXC and XC lines would be a bit stiffer suspension and tigher gearing ratio better suited for more MX and/or bigger jumps.

then the SX version usually has a 4 speed tranny, stiff suspension, no e-start to reduce the weight, set up for SX & MX.

the 250cc should be fine for you for quite some time as the next step up is a 450, then on to a 525/530cc (my bike of choice based on size & experience).

  3. its a good bike

  4. ktm's are very good dirtbikes they have great suspension and can go through alot. It's very tough. But they are really spendy. Since it's a good bike it's worth it. And make sure you learn how to ride one so you don't total it.

  5. For real they are about the best in their class

  6. KTM's are excellent bikes, I've had a few of them and have one currently. They are a bit more pricey. This is just because KTM adds many parts from the factory that most racers replace on their Japanese bikes as soon as they buy them. KTM's come stock with better handlebars, grips, chains, sprockets, etc. There is no real advantage to buying a KTM unless you are a serious rider/racer. Not to say you shouldn't buy one, there is just no real justification for the extra bucks if you're a casual rider. The one exception to that is if you just want a 2 stroke woods bike. KTM is pretty much the only game in town for that. Cost aside it is no better or worse of a beginners bike than any other race bikes in the big 5. A 250F from any of the big 5 manufacturers would be a great choice for your size. Just to clarify on a couple things mentioned in other answers. KTM is not "the best". When is the last time KTM won a MX or SX title in the US? KTM's don't have great suspension. It is good suspension, but any racer will agree that KTM has the worst suspension (for MX/SX) than any of the big 5 due to it being the only brand not using a linkage on the rear. They don't make an MXC anymore and the EXC is only offered in the 450 and 530. Their XC lineup is the woods bike, the XC-W is the woods version with a wide ratio tranny and the SX is the motocross/supercross version.

  7. they re great machines maybe one of the best in the world, but as Manny have stated there pricey, and please take no offense but it is clear since you dint know about KTM, that you are very new in the whole bike business, so I'd encourage u to buy a Japanese bike first get the feel for off road, and them if you want buy a KTM, not only bcause of price but bcause of maintenance,  these are great, amazing even bikes but if you re new they will become more of a burden than anything else difficulty to find parts, etc, etc...

  8. KTM make very good bikes and I'd suggest one of their singles if you're a beginner. However, they are pretty expensive- maybe go for a Suzuki DRM400 as these are quality and can be found pretty cheaply. Much more likely to find parts as well.

  9. The best

Start on a four stroke 125 or 250.
