Are NY universities really expensive?

I'm making plans to study in another state and though of NY...

Some of my friends told me that it's really hard to obtain financial aid even if you filled your w4 as single and living alone..

Is there anyway that I could make it less expensive or is it better to go somewhere else?

SUNY school are cheap look into those school.

or try private school where there is no out of state fee

well i live in ny and the SUNY schools are not that expensive (compared to the UC system in california who charge 40K if you're out of state).  since you dont live in NY, if u go to a SUNY school, it could probably run up to 15,000? i think? im not too sure.  all i knwo is that if ur in state in ny, it could cost less than 8,000.  

i think that u think thats its expensive to live in new york city? cuz u said something about an apartment and that made methink that u want to go to school in the city.  if that's the case, then yes, NY universities are really expensive, if you're considering Columbia U, NYU, fordham or juilliard.  those could run up to 40K (whether u live in ny or not)
