yes, i got mine about 6 years ago, and absolutely adore her.  they are very afftectionate, and get attached to their owner.  They do require a lot of attention, however, and if they are left alone for too long, tend to get loud.

Cockatiels are amazing first birds... if you get a hand tame one they will hang out with you i have 3 my self. and they are the best!

Yes they make good first birds aslong as you get a hand fed one!

Oh yeah, they are great!!  I have a cockatiel and a green cheeked conure, and my cockatiel , Echo, is just awesome.  

They can learn words, and whistle alot of songs too.

Another "starter" bird that would be good is the parrakeet.  But whatever you choose, they are all pretty friendly!

Cockatails are great pets.  They are beautiful, funny, and very  playful, but if this is your first pet you may want a different bird.  Maybe a parakeet.  Don't get get me wrong I love cockatails.  My third pet is a cockatail and he's my first bird, but sometimes he gets a little crazy.  If you really want a cockatail then get one, but if I were you I would consider a parakeet.

Yes! I have a cockateel (sp?). They are very friendly and gentle so long as they are treated right. They can learn all sorts of songs and they can even learn how to talk, just a little. They are easy to tame.
