  3. demogirl has the definition right but hasn't answered the question. Most pines are allelopathic ... they lay down a carpet of old pine needles over time that decay slowly and they they release chemicals that prevent most other plants from germinating under them (not to mention their own seeds .. but this helps space the plants and avoid competition).
